Getting Ready

March 14, 2012

Cleaned up the garden a bit yesterday, and have started some peppers, kale, romaine lettuce, and chard already.  I will be starting some tomatoes in the next week or so.  The garlic that was planted last fall is showing itself ever so slightly as well.

Did you start the peppers, kale, romaine and chard inside or outside? (I am wondering with the crazy weather if I should be planting cool-weather seeds including lettuce and spinach soon) Thanks!! [I love the title of your blog 🙂 ]

These have all been started indoors. Kale, Chard and Romaine will all go out fairly early, but the peppers (both hot and sweet) will hang out indoors until late May. Thanks for the question and the comment on the name. Cheers.

When can you put Kale and Chard out in the garden? (what temperatures can they deal with?) I’m new to seed starting this season, but from what I’ve read I’m thinking sometime in April might be ok (always weather dependant, of course, like everything garden related!)
I haven’t started them yet, but I’m planning to do so sometime this week.

The kale will go out mid April and the chard later in the month. It is of course weather dependent though. I am not really sure on the specific temperatures that they can deal with, but they seem to do well early in the season.
